Golden Retrievers are calm, well mannered, and extremely affectionate. They are easy to train as well, very intelligent, and great for those who need a companion. Labradors have their origin in Newfoundland during the 1700s. These dogs were developed to help the fishermen tow in their fishing nets. The Labrador retriever was then imported to England during the 19th century. The fact that these dogs are so adaptable, and various other characteristics, has made them extremely popular family pets. Labrador Retrievers have excellent noses which they use for tracking purposes, and their mouths are also very soft this enables them to retrieve game without doing any damage to it. Lurchers are originally from Ireland and Great Britain where they were originally bred in the 1600's. This breed was mainly used to poach rabbits and hares. Cocker Spaniels were first recognized in England in the late 1880s. During the same period they were also introduced in America. The Cocker Spaniel is believed to originate from Spanish blood. For centuries the Rough Coated Collie was barely known external to Scotland. It is now one of the world's most well-liked breeds. Descended from generations of hard- working herding dogs, it is a meticulous creature of vast intelligence. The breed's name almost certainly comes from its charge - the Scottish black-faced sheep called the Colley. Early on Rough Collies were smaller, with broader heads and shorter muzzles. Dalmatian. Some traces of these dogs are found in Egypt, so it surely is a very old breed. During the 1700s a dog known as the Bengal pointer, very alike the Dalmatian, existed in England. The maker of this mixture was a German tax collector named Louis Dobermann. Dobermann had to travel often through bandit-infested areas, and decided to build a watchdog and a bodyguard able of handling any situation that might occur. Carrying the name of its inventor, the Doberman was first presented at a dog show in 1876. It was a big success straight away.
The English Cocker Spaniel actually originated from Wales. Their skills in hunting the bird known as the woodcock earned them their name. Similar to other cocker spaniels, the English Cocker Spaniel was bred to flush out birds from even thick bushes.
The English Pointer was first developed in England, although its ancestry can be traced back to a variety of European sporting breeds. These European breeds were too slow for what the breeders were looking for, and it is believed that breeds such as the Greyhound and Setters may have been introduced to perk up the speed and stamina of these dogs. By the 19th century the English Pointer had become the top of the pointing breeds. Today they do extremely well as a sporting dog and are a common winner of the national pointing trials.
The English Springer Spaniel is the founder of all the English hunting spaniels. During the Renaissance, it was though to be the perfect companion for the European hunter. It first became popular in America during the 1700s. The Springer Spaniel gets its name from the methods they use to flushing game: they spring forward to drive birds out of their hiding. These dogs do very well in hunting on both land and water. They are also very fine retrievers. The English springer spaniel’s cheery, calm personality makes him a perfect family dog. Some of their talents include hunting, tracking, retrieving, watchdogging and performing tricks.
English Setter. The first basic setter was developed in France in the1500s. They were obtained from the Spanish pointer and the French pointer. About three centuries later it was brought to Great Britain, and here its true developer was an extremely intelligent breeder by the name of Sir Edward Laverack. He developed the English setter from early French hunting dogs in the early 1800's. Laverack was so involved in establishing the breed that the English setter is often called the Laverack Setter. These dogs were known for their vast beauty. This is the reason they are therefore foundation stock for many of today's top show dogs. English setters are energetic, fast and very quiet workers with excellent noses. Their coats keep the dogs comfortable in both hot and cold weather conditions. The sweet character of the English setter and their gentleness with children make them wonderful family companion dogs.
Flat-Coated Retrievers had their origin during the 18th century. This breed of dogs was quite popular until the World War commenced - but at that stage they were overshadowed by the Golden Retriever and Labrador breeds. Many dog lovers feel that the Flat-Coated Retriever does not get all the attention that they deserve. They are very good swimmers, and they make wonderful dogs within the family. Flat-Coated Retrievers possess a wonderful sense of smell, and they also have a very good instinct.

Gordon Setters. These dogs have their origin in Scotland during the 1600s. Because of their excellent hunting capabilities, Gordon Setters became very popular dogs. These dogs are the only Scottish gundogs that were bred exclusively to hunt game birds. The fact they have lots of stamina and energy makes them able to hunt in unpleasant weather and also hunt in water and on land.
Great Dane. The first images of a dog very similar to the Great Dane can be seen on Greek money which dates back to 36 B.C. Powerful mastiff-like dogs were brought to Italy and Spain by Asiatic people. These dogs were superb animals, and some of them were able to overcome bears. These dogs were then cross with Irish Greyhounds, and the dogs which came about was the gorgeous Great Dane.
German Shepherd Dogs are originally from Germany, and they were used originally for herding. Eventually these dogs became very popular due to the fact that they are so intelligent, obedient and watchful and also because they are very protective dogs. They also became very involved in police work, military work and search and rescue operations due to these qualities that they possess.
Grey Hound. This very old breed of dogs is the fastest dogs in the world. They can reach speeds of over 40 miles per hour, and on of its greatest characteristics is the speed they possess. It is said that they are originally from the Arabian Sloughi, and were then brought to England by traders before 900 AD. Long ago these dogs were used to hunt deer and boars. It was possibly to easily catch these by pulling them down, without even stopping.
The Irish setter originated from a variety of spaniels, pointers and setters. These dogs were originally called Irish Red Setter in the United States, and at one stage these dogs was red and white with shorter legs than they have today. Irish Setters are very versatile hunting dogs. They are very fast, and they have very good noses. Irish Setters are both pointers and retrievers. Today, many people have these dogs as show companions or as family dogs.
Irish Wolfhounds have their origin from the Cu. These are very large dogs that are used for the hunting of wolves and boars. Irish Wolfhounds used to be given as royal gifts and they eventually became so well-liked that their export from England had to be stopped. The Wolfhound disappeared from Ireland during the year of 1766, but was later brought back to Ireland by the Romans. This breed of dogs was eventually revived by the incursion of Great Dane and Deerhound blood.
Jack Russell Terriers have been developed by a guy called Jack Russell during the 19th century in England. These terriers are very lively, and were used to hunt small game. The working ability of these dogs has been emphasized by breeders, so there is a wide standard including different body types. Old English Sheepdog has its origin from is not entirely known, but some people think that some of their heritage comes from the Scottish Bearded Collie and a few other European herding dogs. The Old English sheepdog, or the Bobtail as they are being called, seems to have been developed around the start of the 19th century in England. Docking the tails of these dogs were started in order to get exemption from taxes for herding dogs. During the 1960s these dogs featured in several Disney movies, which made them very popular. Bobtail puppies are very irresistible, and this added to the popularity of this breed. Unfortunately, due to their popularity they have been over breaded which led to several genetic defects in the bloodlines.
Rhodesian Ridgebacks have their origin in South Africa. It is believed that number of breeds might have been involved in the development of the Ridgeback, including the Mastiff, the Great Dane and the Bloodhound. Ridgebacks developed into very clever dogs, and they are also dogs with lots of strength. These dogs can go with water for extended periods of time, and can also cope with extreme temperatures. Ridgebacks were originally used in packs to hunt antelope, buffalo, leopards and lions. During the 1870s, this breed was taken to Zimbabwe where they enjoyed great success as a hunting dog.
The Rottweiler has it origin from Germany where they were used to control livestock. These dogs have also been used very effectively as guard dogs and police dogs. The Rottweiler today is used several different things, including tracking, herding, police work and obedience trails.
The English Staffordshire Terrier has its origin in Staffordshire, England and it is believed that they have developed from crosses of old English bulldogs and various terriers. The original aggressive dogs were probably descended from Bulldogs and Mastiffs. During the 19th century smaller and faster dogs were needed for dog fighting therefore the English Staffordshire terrier was developed.
Sussex Spaniels are originally from Sussex, England. The Sussex spaniel is known to be rarest of all the spaniel breeds. These dogs were originally developed for the hunting of pheasant and partridges.
